Ashwagandha Withania somnifera

Ashwagandha depresses the central nervous system, causing relaxation. This effect comes from the phytochemicals it contains, referred to as withanolides.  They act as precursors to the hormones that regulate the stress responses in the body.  This is helpful for anxiety disorders.  Anxiety is often related to high-stress levels, coupled with adrenal exhaustion and fatigue.

Ashwagandha has also proved helpful in treating agoraphobia and stress-related infertility. Studies of Ashwagandha show that it is as effective as pharmacological drugs without the harmful side-effects. Ashwagandha is an herb that has great significance in Ayurvedic medicine.  One of its traditional uses was to strengthen the immune system after illness and another was to relieve anxiety. Its value lies in its ability to give energy and create calmness at the same time.Aids in anti- cancer healing as it helps to induce the apoptosis or “programmed cell death” of cancer cells.


Ashwagandha Ayuvedic  Tonic 
Ingredients
1 cup + 2 tablespoons water
2 heaped tablespoons raw macadamia nuts
1 Medjool date or a teaspoon of raw Manuka honey
¼ – ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder
2 pinches of nutmeg powder
2 pinches of clove powder
Pinch of fine sea salt
1/3 – ½ vanilla bean
1 teaspoon ashwagandha root powder 
Instructions
Add all ingredients (even the vanilla bean – no need to scrape the seeds out) in a blender and whizz till smooth and creamy. Transfer to a pot and heat gently.
